Pure
The milk produced at the Kumbhalgarh Camel Dairy is pure and totally natural, nothing added and nothing removed. That’s why its fat and water content are not standardized and fluctuate according to season: during the summer its water content is higher, while in winter fat content increases. This is the difference to conventional milk from which the cream is removed and then recombined again to create toned or half-toned milk with a standard fat content.
Healthy
Because our camels graze only on natural vegetation consisting mostly of trees and shrubs with medicinal value, their milk provides nutrients that are missing from modern diets relying on processed foods. In addition, camel milk raises strengthens the immune system. According to latest research it can help lower blood pressure. Its beneficial effects on Diabetes patients are well known and it is widely used for helping autism kids.
Regional
The quality and taste of our camel milk is specific to our region because the typical “36 plants” only occur in our location at the edge of the Aravalli Hills, in the forests and fields below the majestic Kumbhalgarh Fort.
Activist
With its NGO background, our team is activist, and see the development of a camel milk value chain as a means of empowering Rajasthan’s marginalized camel nomads. By drinking our milk you support their struggle for a liveable future!
The Triple T Principles of the Kumbhalgarh Camel Dairy
Traditional: camels kept in traditional nomadic system
Transparent: All our camel milk suppliers are registered with us, and the whole process from procurement to processing and dispatch is documented
Traceable: We know exactly which herd each batch of camel milk comes from
Camel Milk: A Gourmet food
- We place a big emphasis on hygiene and on the traceability of our milk. Every herder who delivers milk to us has to undergo training in hygienic milk production and all his camels need to be registered and have a health certificate. The latter is provided by the Department of Animal Husbandry of the Government of Rajasthan.
- The milk is delivered early in the morning by motorcycle. We accept only morning milk. After weighing it is checked for fat, water and non-solid fat content, then either pasteurised immediately, or chilled. After pasteurisation, the milk is bottled and then deep frozen. The bottle size is 200 ml corresponding to the daily dose recommended by many doctors.
- We currently ship it out in thermocol boxes filled with ice which ensures that the milk stays frozen until it reaches its end consumer.
- The quality of the milk starts with the healthy camels. The Raika are experts in keeping their animals happy and healthy, but nevertheless sometimes diseases do occur. The two most important ones are mange and trypanosomiasis. We are developing a camel health plan minimizing use of antimicrobials and other drugs, trying to find plant based ethnoveterinary alternatives.
